In the 2006 race for Ohio Governor, Democratic Congressman Ted Strickland defeated Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell by a margin of 60.5% to 36.6%. Voters expressed a desire for change after 16 years of Republican control of the Governor's residence.

Strickland's election as Governor was also seen as having national significance, in part because of the importance Ohio played in the 2008 Presidential Election.

Ohio's chief executive plays a leading role in the direction the state will take on issues that affect the state’s economic outlook and the quality of life of each and every one of its citizens. The Governor proposes the state’s budget to the legislature and appoints the men and women who lead the state agencies that impact our families, businesses, schools, health and environment. The policy direction set by the Governor will have a daily impact on every Ohio citizen for the next four years.

Profile

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland

Governor Ted Strickland was elected to a four-year term in 2006. Prior to becoming Governor, he served in the United States Congress as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993-1995 and from 1997-2006. The Governor worked as an Administrator of a Methodist Children's Home; as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Shawnee State University; and as a Consulting Psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.

The Governor's campaign was centered on the theme of 'Turnaround Ohio,' a campaign platform designed to present the Democratic candidate's vision of the Governorship and the future of Ohio.  Details of the plan are available here. You can view the Governor's official web site here.

During his campaign, Strickland promised to give the need for job creation and retention critical attention as Governor.  He appointed his running mate, Lee Fisher, to serve as the Director of the Ohio Department of Development in addition to his role of Lt. Governor.  This agency plays a critical role in helping protect and create jobs, improving the state's economy, and promoting the future prosperity of all Ohioans. Lt. Governor Fisher resigned from his Director position in 2009, in order to run for U.S. Senate.

The Governor's first official action was to issue an Executive Order establishing new ethics requirements for himself, the new Lt. Governor, members of their staffs, and employees of state cabinet agencies.
