U.S. unemployment rises to 14-year high of 6.5 percent

November 07, 2008 (Associated Press) - The Labor Department says the nation's employers cut 240,000 jobs in October, hurtling the U.S. unemployment rate to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent. So far this year, a staggering 1.2 million jobs have disappeared. Read the full story here.

Ohio unemployment fund could be broke by end of year

November 14, 2008 (Columbus Dispatch) - The State of Ohio needs a $550 million loan to keep its unemployment compensation fund from going broke. In every year but one over the past decade, the fund has paid out more in jobless benefits than it collected in unemployment taxes from employers. The state now projects that, by Dec. 31, there will be $28 million left in the fund. The average weekly payout in benefits is $35 million. Read the full story here.
